The rainy season is upon us (thunder is booming in the distance). We are stranded in Medellin waiting for my real passport, now that the temporary one has taken us as far as it can. Mark has the bikes dismantled (as he does when they stand still for more than 48 hours). It’s the beginning of Holy Week (Semana Santa) and everyone tells us nothing will happen now for at least a week. All of Colombia is on holiday.
But, looking on the bright side, apart from the sogginess, it’s not such a bad place to be stranded. The bikes are snug and dry in the hostel garage, the natives are unbelievably friendly, and we have discovered a fantastic network of streets dedicated to all things motorcycle. Every conceivable motorbike part or accessory, ranging from spark plugs to tailor-made waterproofs is available, and at bargain prices. And, if they don’t have it, they will find it elsewhere, or even custom make it. It’s fantastic!
We had a seat recovered for 20,000 pesos (about £7). The guy did a beautiful job and it took him less than 2 hours. We’ve also bought a new clutch bracket for 4,000 pesos (about £1.30), spark plug caps for 11,000 pesos (about £4) and other sundry items (spark plugs, stickers, oil filters, brake pads…), We’ve also ordered o-rings from the Yamaha dealer and hope they will be in on Monday.
