This morning we left Comitan early and crossed the border from Cuauhtemoc, Mexico to La Mesilla, Guatemala. It was a very easy border crossing with absolutely no hassles, but it still took a couple of hours. We had to have the wheels fumigated, get our passports stamped and pay for our temporary bike import stickers. We were amazed to find the narrow road across the border lined with market stalls on both sides of the road. Some of the stalls were clearly in ‘no-man’s land’ and people were zipping up and down the road on foot or on motorbikes and just ducking their heads under the partly raised official barrier!
| This market stall was actually obscuring signs for the official buildings! |
Our early start paid off because just as we had finished all the formalities (at about midday) we noticed a bus full of tourists walking into the immigration office that we’d just left. That would mean long queues – the officials don’t work fast around here!
