Much to our astonishment and relief, the palapas (palm thatch) roof of our hut here in Frontera Corozal kept us dry through a dramatic storm last night. As we laid in bed we could feel the thunder and lightning through our bodies. We woke to the amazing sound of the jungle, including howler monkeys, which make a noise unlike anything we’ve heard before. We thought it sounded like a dragon breathing fire in the distance (and we certainly have never heard that before). We were up at dawn to take a jungle boat trip to the incredible Mayan ruins at Yaxchilan, close to the Guatemalan border. Being the only people there made the experience even more magical. We must’ve looked very British wandering around the ruins carrying our umbrellas, but we were jolly glad to have them, because it poured down half-way through our visit!
It’s rained on and off all day today and it’s still raining at bedtime. Grumble, grumble! This isn’t the sort of weather we left Blighty for!
