“I wasn’t looking for more work, but…

…I seem to have found some. Sigh!” (Mark)

chiapas 009 Looks like the wheel bearings on Claire’s rear wheel need replacing.

Shame I didn’t check this BEFORE refitting the wheel when I changed the tyre. Still at least I didn’t pinch the tube on this one like last time.

Luckily we’ve got the parts and the socket for the front sprocket nut is perfect for driving them in.

Good job no one in the hotel has batted an eyelid as we turn their beautiful courtyard into a bike workshop – doing oil changes and replacing a rear tyre.

First job tomorrow: Find an improvised drift to get the wheel bearings out and buy some ice cubes to chill the new bearings before fitting. Hopefully this will work as well as putting them in the freezer overnight does.

  1. The problem wasn't the bearing after all. The recess it sits in is worn. A Guy in a local bike shop used a grinder to make a point on a screwdriver and I centre-punched about 20 spots around the circumference. Hopefully this will last a while.
