We have heard a few times now about this scam and thought it worthwhile making people aware of it – just in case. Scammers have been known to hack people’s email or facebook accounts, or get hold of their mobile phones and use the contact details to ask for money to be sent (e.g. as bail to get out of jail or because you’ve been mugged and need to get home). So, please beware of scammers pretending to be us and asking for money! Remember there is a lot of personal information (like photos, names of friends and family members, school, place of work etc) on facebook and on blogs and scammers use this to try to convince you that they really are who they say they are. If you are in doubt, check for information that is not out there (e.g. where we first met, or a place or memory that that a third party could not know).
